Description

Much of the development of the cultures of the Mississippian Period has been attributed to the innovation of an intensive agriculture based upon com, beans and squash, all of which were indigenous to Central America. The adoption of these practices could not have occurred without extensive trade and communication networks. They were likely to have been included among other ideas and physical elements that could still reside in, or be inferred from, the archaeological record. Correlation of a specific crop variety, trade good, stylistic treatment or other element over a broad number of sites, within the context of their relative geographic location and temporal occurrence, can help in relating the Mississippian cultures to their contemporaries in MesoAmerica.
