Abstract
What happened to my ‘American Dream’?” Maria Clara Vargas, a Colombian-American university professor has been unemployed for over a year. As she deeply mourns the death of her American Dream and struggles to come to terms with her social invisibility, she reveals a portrait of what it means to be middle-class in America today. The story is woven through interconnected snapshots of individual characters, neighbors in Building 12, Luxury Apartments. As a realistic fiction novel, the characters and their stories have been born from real people and the collection of real accounts from a wide diverse population. However, the characters themselves are fictional and any resemblance to reality is coincidental.
