Abstract
Usability is an important component of technical communication because user advocacy is a significant part of a technical communicator’s role. Gamification is a relatively new aspect of usability that has become more popular with designers. Although they have not traditionally been incorporated into gamification, slot machines have the potential to be used in this way. Because slot machines have been successful at engaging users, it is important to study how their design aspects could influence usability, and as a result, technical communication. This presentation discusses various aspects of usability in slot machines, ties these aspects to similar concepts in gamification, and recommends ways that slot machine usability can be applied to areas of user experience and technical communication.
