Abstract
Our panel brings together public, school, academic, and special librarians to discuss affordable resources and strategies for collecting a range of materials (movies, magazines, print books, electronic resources) and promoting those collections. Attendees will learn about how librarians can work together and support one another in this endeavor across institution types, including middle school students using a special library for History Day projects and undergraduates using public and special libraries for their research. Finally, we will emphasize the relationship between collections and service. While always part of core library functions, promotion and outreach take on a particularly important dimension for LGBTQ collections in part because the metrics often employed to determine use can obscure the value of these materials. These activities in turn are an important source of information for determining user needs and collection gaps.
