Abstract

I present SEÑAL, A computational program for the linguistic analysis and assessment of Spanish L2 compositions. The modular program allows the user to extract indices of language development and assess the proficiency of Spanish second language essays. Moreover, an additional module checks the use of machine translation passages. The program is composed of 5 NLP modules: 1. A Lexical Analyzer (SEÑAL-LEX), 2. A Syntactical Analyzer (SEÑAL-SYNT), 3. A Grammar Assistant (SEÑAL-GRAMMAR), 4. A Machine Learning Classifier of Language Proficiency (SEÑAL-MLL2), 5. A Machine Translation Identification System (CAPTURA). Finally, I discuss the potential applications of SEÑAL into different research venues and the Spanish language curriculum.

This is a presentation for faculty, staff, students, and the community on April 22, 2022 at 11:00 AM. Presentation details will be forthcoming.
