Description

Popular media and academic scholarship has raised serious questions about US college students' general knowledge and awareness of world events. Through conducting exercises in course content and curriculum, educators have addressed the problem of media literacy and awareness in the classroom. The purpose of this evaluation research project was to evaluate student perceptions and understanding of global media and concepts in a global Women's Studies course at MSU Mankato through a pre and post Test Design. Students were asked to assess their self reported awareness of global issues through questionnaires at the beginning and end of the research project. After the initial assessment, students were required to locate, summarize, and respond to contemporary news articles on an electronic discussion board. These responses were analyzed to assess how well students were able to utilize course concepts in understanding the events illuminated within each newspaper article.
