Into the Woods, We Go
Abstract
Ashley Richardson’s 2020 thesis, titled Into The Woods, We Go, is a novel-length work written for the Master of Fine Arts Creative Writing Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The author explores themes of motherhood, sisterhood, womanhood, and family, while questioning the balance between fate and choice. By weaving elements of fairytales, folklore, and oral storytelling throughout the text, readers are challenged to suspend disbelief and explore the human spirit through a new lens. In this novel, set in the town of Talking Rock, GA, generational curses, ghosts, magic, and spirits are not the “supernatural.” They are a perception, a way of viewing, understanding, and interacting with the world. That is to say, they are reality.
