Among the Padded Footsteps
Abstract
Among the Padded Footsteps by Michael Malmberg is a novel set in Central Florida during a destructive fictional hurricane. The work explores themes of disconnection, identity formation, and shifting societal values through the experiences of young adults. Its protagonist, Verge, is a recent college graduate who returns to a mediocre job as a weatherman in his hometown. Living back home with his mother and two siblings leaves him dissatisfied after four years of independence and partying with intimate friends. As he tries to reconnect with his siblings his past love for partying begins to cause conflict with his mother. Meanwhile, he attempts to maintain his relationship with his best friend Jenny despite her moving to the West Coast. As he begins to gain popularity for his absurd weather reporting videos and a viral music video he acted in for Jenny’s band, his sense of self and place in society continue to slip further from his grasp.
