My Mother Gave Me a Man's Name

Abstract

This thesis contains forty-three poems that deal with themes of family, relationships, and working-class life. Home to a variety of unique features and challenges that my work contends with, the Rust Belt makes up nearly all specified settings in my poems. The first section contains personal poems that are specific to the speaker as an individual. The second section expands to include narratives about family and community; it employs language from the Rust Belt’s industry and geography. The final section is the least personal but expands to include community and history.
