Description

Music has been a part of the curriculum of Minnesota State University, Mankato (MSU,M) since the founding of the institution in 1868. In the early years of the Mankato Normal School, the instructors in music also held positions in other areas, and rarely stayed at the school longer than a few years. During these years, music activities were meant to supplement the degree in teaching. These factors made it difficult for the development of an extensive program for music. It was not until the early twentieth century that a department of music at MSU,M was established. The expansion of the department was largely due to certain faculty who held innovative ideas for the teaching of music. This presentation will focus on the development of the music program from 1868 until the middle of the twentieth century. This research uses course guides, school yearbooks, and documents held in the archives of Minnesota State University, Mankato as resources.
