Description

Despite detrimental effects on the body, limited studies have investigated the use of smokeless tobacco in postsecondary students. The purposes of this study were to determine: 1) current knowledge about smokeless tobacco, and 2) the effect of a statewide smoking ban on smokeless tobacco use for students at a state University. Surveys were distributed to 471 students enrolled in "Health 101", with 88.5% (N=417) participating, representing over 41 declared majors. The typical participant was female (69%), Caucasian, from a small town, and 20 years old.

Twenty-two percent of males in this sample have used smokeless tobacco within the last 30 days. The average user was male (82.4%), Caucasian (88.2%), with a mean age of 20. Participants had a mean knowledge score of 7.8, constructed from nine items on the survey. Independent tests revealed non-users scored higher (p=.000) than users and females scored higher (p=.000) than males. Forty-seven percent of participants believed or were unsure if smokeless tobacco was safer than cigarettes, and 25.6% were unaware smokeless tobacco was related to heart disease. This sample of users (N=34) did not demonstrate a significant difference (p=.71) in use after the implementation of the statewide smoking ban.
