The Transient
Abstract
The Transient is a novel that explores the journey of an ambitious young Indian woman, Ritu, whose intellectual passions and disappointments take her across three countries, from her homeland of India to the former colonial mother country of Britain to the new aspirational metropolis, the United States. Yet where a conventional immigration narrative might conclude with its protagonist’s assimilation in the West, Ritu’s trajectory unravels under the crises of the twenty-first century, such as the rise in systemic racism and xenophobia, and the ongoing COVID pandemic, which result in Ritu’s eventual return to India. The global shifts of the twenty-first century render equivocal any straightforward trajectory of personal and intellectual growth.
